Kathmandu Durbar Square

Kathmandu Durbar Square is a world heritage site. It is also known as Hanuman Dhoka. The name Hanuman Dhoka Durbar came from the statue of Hanuman established by the King Pratap Malla at the entrance of the royal palace in 1672 A.D. The surrounding area has many temples which are built during 15th to 18th century.

The major attractions of Hanuman-dhoka Durbar Square are Taleju Temple, Jagannath Temple, Kumari Ghar, Hanuman Dhoka, Shiva Parvati Temple, Kasthamandap, Big drums, Kal Bhairav and many more.

Swoyambhunath Stupa

Swoyambhunath Stupa also known as monkey temple is one of the most famous Buddhist Stupas on top of the hill surrounded by the small forest in Kathmandu valley. The temple offers a magnificent view of Kathmandu Valley.

It is believed that once the Kathmandu valley was a huge lake out of which grew a mystical Lotus. Manjushree, a Bodhisattwa came from China and drained out the water and the Lotus flower came to rest and stayed where the stupa exists. The stupa is topped by the painted eyes of Buddha and surrounded by prayer wheels and numerous smaller temples.

Bouddhanath Stupa

Bouddhanath Stupa is the largest stupa in Nepal and the holiest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet. It is believed that the stupa was built in 5th century because there had been twelve years of drought so the king built the stupa hoping that this would help to restore the water and it did so with the help of the dew drops, for this reason, it is also called the Dew Stupa. It is built on an octagonal base inset with prayer wheels. It is also known as mini Tibet.

Pashupatinath Temple

Pashupatinath Temple is one of the holiest Hindu temple in Nepal dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is situated on the bank of the holy River Bagmati. Every year many Hindus come to visit Pashupatinath Temple.

The main temple of Pashupatinath is a cubic construction with four main doors and all of them are covered with silver sheets. The two storied roof is made from copper and is covered with gold. The temple is beautifully decorated with wooden sculptures. Only followers of Hinduism are allowed to enter the main temple. However, the other buildings are available for foreigners to visit.
